A Hike in the Boise Foothills

Shared moments both timeless and priceless

Here is Vincent's Profound Photo for this month. The beautiful image and description are particularly meaningful to me because I'm the person on the trail ahead. Friendship is something you can't buy and gorgeous days and landscapes are items you can't buy either, they are gifts - blessings - in our lives. Experiences we share are unforgettable. The combination, as Vincent writes, can be endlessly profound.

Note the especially meaningful verse at the end. It's a haiku.

Nicely done brother.

Normally, I like to publicly display, whether in print or on the internet, my more artistic photographs. However, this photograph is profound, not because it displays a beautiful and artistically displayed timeless moment, but rather because is it a simple depiction of taking a hike in the Boise foothills (Five Mile Gulch) on a gorgeously sunny day on a solemn holiday (Memorial Day) with a dear friend and spiritual brother.

Such shared moments are both timeless and priceless.

Verse:

Irreverently,
two friends share thoughts and silence
while hiking. Profound.

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

Life is messy. We know that. But some people move through that mess with a surprising kind of grace.

“The poor in spirit are by no means poor-spirited. They are persons who see so much to be, so much to do, such limitless reaches to life and goodness that they are profoundly conscious of their insufficiency and incompleteness.” ~Rufus Jones, The Inner Life , p. 19
