Repairing the Earth - Part I

Michael Kroth • April 20, 2026

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

We have two contemplative services in our church each week, and our theme for both just now is is the idea of Tikkun Olam - a Hebrew phrase “connected with human responsibility for fixing what is wrong with the world.” That’s a huge topic and it’s all interconnected - including care and spirit and morality and justice.

I wrote an essay on Substack I called Repairing the Earth - Part I.  Here I’m just pondering about fixing the material Earth. Check out the video - featuring (part of) St. Francis’ Canticle of the Creatures - I used to tee it up.

Question

What are the most important things we can do individually to repair the Earth?

The best way to share your thoughts about this on my Substack (my site is totally free) here:

Just A Heads Up

I’m beginning to use this Profound Living space differently than my Substack essays. Here there will be more of an emphasis on short reflections, videos, and  exploring ideas. There, there will be longer essays, many related to this idea of Messy Elegance that I'm exploring.

I'll also tee up my Substack essays here, like I'm doing here, so you can follow those as well, if you wish.  Substack is a much better place for engagement and feedback from you than here at the Profound Living blog, and I want to provide that opportunity for anyone who wants to weigh in on this or that.

The idea is to avoid duplication between the two sites, while giving the maximum opportunity to see what's going on in each place.  Here, I'm thinking we may also have - as we have had in the past - guest photos and essays in addition to what I'll be adding myself.

It's an experiment - we'll see how it works out!

If “expensive” were one of the principal attributes of what it means to be elegant then most of the world could never experience elegance. But anyone can, it turns out.
