I Came Upon A Lonely Leaf

by Michael Kroth, Poet

I came upon a lonely leaf

just lying on the browning grass

'twas time to shelter time to grieve

for summer's days were soon to pass

I shared the leaf with my true love

Hoping on hope that she would see

In fallen leaf from far above

My heart that lay there desperately

Instead she said she'd leave that day

for he who'd give her fame and gold

Instead she said she'd leave that day

For someone rich and fair and bold

I took my lovely leaf to home

And laid it on my frozen hearth

And dreamed of her, that she would come

To claim her leaf and share my heart

I lie there weeping in a blur

I sat there 'til the leaf decayed

I sat there as my love for her

Soon shriveled, crumbled, blew away

I'd seen this lovely, lonely leaf

And shared it with a lovely lass

And then I thought in disbelief

You're once again a horse's ass

--------------

Alternative Robert Frost ending:

I'd seen this lovely, lonely leaf

And shared it with a desperate heiress

I knew one day through all my grief

There'd be some fun indeed in Paris

Whoops, no...

OK...

I'd seen this lovely, lonely leaf

And shared it with a gorgeous dancer

And that my friends, you'll be relieved

Turned out to be the perfect answer.

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

Life is messy. We know that. But some people move through that mess with a surprising kind of grace.

“The poor in spirit are by no means poor-spirited. They are persons who see so much to be, so much to do, such limitless reaches to life and goodness that they are profoundly conscious of their insufficiency and incompleteness.” ~Rufus Jones, The Inner Life , p. 19
