I Left The Gate Open. Profound Living. Michael Kroth

I Left The Gate Open

I left the gate open Grandpa,

The cows are out and everywhere.

I can’t stop crying Grandpa,

I let you down.

I dropped out of school Dad,

Can I come live with you a while?

I can’t stop crying Dad,

I let you down.

I lost my job today sweetheart,

The kids’ll have to know,

I can’t stop crying sweetie,

I let you down.

We watched McCarthy ruin your life my friend,

A nation’s reign of fear.

I can’t stop crying oh my friend,

Our nation let you down.

I heard the mob chant send her back did you?

And still you protest not.

I can’t stop crying my dear God

Your children let you down.

We left the gate open Grandpa,

Our values been dispersed.

I can’t stop crying Grandpa,

I let you down.

Who'll stand against this meanness Lord,

Against those hate-filled ways

I can’t stop crying through these tears

We will not let you down.

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).
