Why I Chose This Photo

It's taken from the Doge's Palace in Venice, the Doge being the "emperor" of Venice at the height of Venice's power. The Doge, once selected, lived out the rest of his life (or at least as long as he chose to be Doge) within the confines of the magnificent palace. Though opulent and provisioned with every luxury known, the Doge was prisoner of his wealth and power. This is a view of St. Mark's cathedral from a bottle glass window - one of a limited number of views of the outside world...
