Seek to Be Meek - Humility Series III

Seek to be meek. If we are humble, we cannot be humble. Mikey, The humble photographer

If we are humble, we cannot be humbled.

Humility is founded in the deep-rooted recognition that there is much more in the universe than us. That there is much more than anything we can ever be or know. That we are worthy, can be joyous, and can make a positive difference in the world regardless of fame, fortune, beauty, health, intelligence, or social status.

We are humbled when life in whatever way causes us to realize that we are not as wonderful as we thought we were. We think we are in control, and then we get fired or break an ankle or our spouse leaves us. We think we are attractive, and then we age or have surgery, or our metabolism changes.

But...if we start with a humble spirit, we cannot be humbled.

 We are humble.

If we are humble, we recognize the world does not revolve around us. There are others with greater needs who are happier with far less.

 We are humble.

If we are humble, we have no need to humble others to make us feel important. We don’t need to feel important. Or powerful. Or “better-than”.

 We are humble.

If we are humble, we naturally see the hope and the potential that others represent in the world. We naturally want others to succeed without regard to our own success.

 We are humble.

If we are humble, we do not care who gets credit. It does not matter to us, we do not covet it, we want to share it.

 We are humble.

If we are humble, we can easily relax into the beauty and the glory and the peace of the present moment. We do not dwell on the past or worry about the future because we accept that we are imperfect beings.

 We are humble.

We are humble when we are grateful for the many unearned gifts we are given every day. We are humble when we have a deep belief that who we are and what we are is more than enough regardless of what the world says about us or how it may try to humiliate us. We are humble when we realize we are not perfect and never will be. We are humble when we sense that we have more to give to the world and to others than we are or are likely to contribute. We are humble when we empty our minds of every thought and sense the mystery and the power and the energy that extends far beyond our ability to completely perceive.

We are humble. We live in humility. That is our practice - never ending, and approach - always imperfect, each day.

If we are humble, we cannot be humbled. We are humble .

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

“The poor in spirit are by no means poor-spirited. They are persons who see so much to be, so much to do, such limitless reaches to life and goodness that they are profoundly conscious of their insufficiency and incompleteness.” ~Rufus Jones, The Inner Life , p. 19
