New York City skyline, circa 1980

"...the sunset over the city, combined with the late afternoon clouds...as well as the fire-red burnt sky seem to foreshadow events..."

I took this photo of the NYC (Manhattan) skyline from the top row of Shea Stadium while watching a Mets game. As I look at this photo today, I’m aware of how my mind creates some symbolism of the different elements of the photo. First, the World Trade Towers, seen rising on the left, had only recently been built, and after a period of economic decline in the mid-to-late 70s, there was a sense of hope in the air at that time of the reemergence of NYC’s dominant role as a beacon of cultural and economic prosperity. Second, the sunset over the city, combined with the late afternoon clouds appearing to move in over the towers, as well as the fire-red burnt sky seem seem to foreshadow events to take place just over 20 years later.

Of course, such foreshadowing is really all in my head. Or is it?

If “expensive” were one of the principal attributes of what it means to be elegant then most of the world could never experience elegance. But anyone can, it turns out.

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).
