Here's one that I just took at Dripping Springs in the Organ Mountains, Las Cruces, New Mexico. This spot teases out the child in me as my imagination runs wild with a Zane Grey like story of the old west. Once part of a working ranch, the land was first deeded over to the Nature Conservancy, which in turn deeded it to the Bureau of Land Management once the site was dedicated as a national monument. The building in this picture was part of a very rustic "resort" where flatlanders from Las Cruces trekked to escape some of the summer heat. There were sleeping accommodations, a store, restaurant and livery for the horses. A sanatorium was also built right above the springs mostly for those with lung disorders like tuberculosis.
So, close your eyes, hear the clip clop of hooves and the warning shout that echoes through the ravines...profoundly grateful this treasure is now forever preserved.
