The Livery

"The trail leading from Las Cruces up to Albuquerque is named the Jornado del Muerto - the Journey of Death..."

This is another picture taken at Dripping Springs, Organ Mountains National Monument, that takes me back to the old west. This building, the livery, is one of the several that I mentioned in an earlier post that comprised a "resort" of sorts in the Organ Mountains above the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Las Cruces is about 10 miles west of this location - horses walk at about 3 miles per hour on level ground. So, the trek in a wagon up the mountain is probably at least four hours...no air conditioning...little shade...no water between here and there. The trail leading from Las Cruces up to Albuquerque is named the Jornado del Muerto - - the Journey of Death - gives some idea of the foreboding environment. Today, I'm grateful for a car with air conditioning!

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

“The poor in spirit are by no means poor-spirited. They are persons who see so much to be, so much to do, such limitless reaches to life and goodness that they are profoundly conscious of their insufficiency and incompleteness.” ~Rufus Jones, The Inner Life , p. 19
