My Reading From Joseph Heller's Catch-22

I was privileged to read a selection from Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, for the University of Idaho's Banned Books week this year. I have had a long relationship with this book over half a century, as I explain in the video. I have written about Catch-22, and also Grapes of Wrath (see also my Reading from Grapes of Wrath for Banned Books Week ), in a previous Profound Living essay, My Intimate Relationship With Books , and also in a piece called The Irreverent Writer for the Idaho Writer's Guild.

Needless to say, I believe this to be an important work and that irreverent satire is essential for our times.

Here, I enjoyed reading about Yossarian's (the main character in the book) take on God during war - it's not a pretty one, and also Doc Daneeka's explanation of Catch-22.

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

“The poor in spirit are by no means poor-spirited. They are persons who see so much to be, so much to do, such limitless reaches to life and goodness that they are profoundly conscious of their insufficiency and incompleteness.” ~Rufus Jones, The Inner Life , p. 19
