Caims - Circles of Protection

Michael Kroth • November 11, 2019

Caims are circles of protection used in Celtic Christianity. I learned about them when facilitating a discussion of the Practice of Encircling, from Christine Valters Paintner's book, Soul's Slow Ripening: 12 Celtic Practices Seeking The Sacred . I find these kinds of practices to be very meaningful, even simply in their symbolism and in helping me pay attention to deeper meanings of life. I've embedded a couple of URLs here for further information about caims.

I made this image to hand out in class so that people could be reminded of the circle of gifts that surround us constantly. This photo was taken in 2018, during the Habitat for Humanity build our church, Cathedral of the Rockies , leads each year. The circle, symbolic here, was made from a jet stream. I don't know if the jet was just passing by or if the circle was intentional, but I pulled out my phone and snapped a picture.

I thought folks might be able to use some additional protection on this first day of the week.

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

“The poor in spirit are by no means poor-spirited. They are persons who see so much to be, so much to do, such limitless reaches to life and goodness that they are profoundly conscious of their insufficiency and incompleteness.” ~Rufus Jones, The Inner Life , p. 19
