Tree and Snow, Boise Foothills, February 12, 2021

Vincent J. Fortunato • February 19, 2021

I am fortunate to live right up against the Boise foothills. Just about every day, we take our dogs for a hike on the trails behind our house. From one particular perspective on one particular trail, a solitary tree sits near the ridge line of a lower foothill. Every time I would take this trail and pass the tree, regardless of the season, an image would come to mind of the tree against a white blanket of snow. However, for the past couple of years since ‘discovering’ the tree, the weather never really cooperated…that is, until last Saturday. So, with camera and tripod secured on my back, I traipsed through several inches of freshly fallen snow. And there it was…the tree in a snowstorm, just like I had imagined. Laying prone in the snow and looking up at the tree, I composed the image to match what I had originally envisioned. This is the image at the top of this blog. However, as I was about to depart having, I believe, successfully captured the image that had inhabited my mind for the past couple of years, I decided to zoom in on the tree for a different look. That image is depicted in the thumbnail and at the bottom of this post. In many ways, I feel that the second image (the close up) is the more powerful of the two. And yet, it is the other one that was true to my vision. Which one resonates with you, the reader?

Earth Day is this week. As we consider the state of our world - and the ecology of both our material and spiritual environment - it makes sense to ask what our role is, has been, and is supposed to be in relationship to "our common home" (Pope Francis).

Here are some initial thoughts about elegance, nature, and depth; a poem about happiness; and even a haiku.

Life is messy. We know that. But some people move through that mess with a surprising kind of grace.

“The poor in spirit are by no means poor-spirited. They are persons who see so much to be, so much to do, such limitless reaches to life and goodness that they are profoundly conscious of their insufficiency and incompleteness.” ~Rufus Jones, The Inner Life , p. 19
